There is no place in the world like the Great Sand DunesNational Park. Climbing to the tops of the sandy peaks and then running or sliding down the cascading hills is exhilarating. The unique landscape feels like it belongs on another planet while also serving as an important reminder about why protecting our own planet is so important.

Still, Trump’s Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke and his supporters are willing to put this land at risk.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is proposing to auction off 18,000 acres of oil and gas leases in southern Colorado. The proposed lease sale includes lands with important wildlife habitat and recreation opportunities adjacent to the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness and Huerfano State Wildlife Area and just a few miles from our beloved Great Sand Dunes National Park.

In his haste to implement the Trump Administration’s illogical push toward “energy dominance”, Interior Secretary Zinke has routinely placed treasured public lands like Dinosaur National Monument, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and now Great Sand Dunes National Park squarely in the oil and gas industry’s crosshairs.

Despite recent efforts by Secretary Zinke to limit public participation in public lands planning, we still have a chance to stand up against these lease sales — the BLM is holding a 15-day comment period where they’ll accept input from the public on the environmental assessment for this proposal. We need to flood the BLM with comments making it clear that we want our public lands and resources protected.
